Proposed Waste To Energy Power Station

We the undersigned petition the council to investigate the proposal for a new power station on the site of the St James Mill Road depot thoroughly with regard to implications for both pollution and risk of combustion. We further call upon the Borough Council to enter into extensive public consultation on this proposal to ensure that the views of residents affected by this scheme, both in St James and surrounding areas, are taken into account. The proposed location for the new power plant, sited as it is close to the BP Fuel storage depot, increases the risk to residents when the element of combustion used in waste-to-energy schemes is taken into account. Vital Energi describes the process on their website as follows: “Waste-to-energy refers to the range of processes that cause waste to combust at high temperatures.” This can be accessed by following this link: http://www.vitalenergi.co.uk/technologies/waste-to-energy/ The risk of pollution created by a new plant has been acknowledge.

The proposed Location of this plant is highly questionable being in VERY close proximity to a Residential Area, Fuel Storage Depot & Railway Line. Furthermore, the pollutants generated will be dispersed not only over St. James but also Far Cotton, the Town Centre, Dallington and neighbouring areas dependent on wind direction. The increased traffic of heavy delivery vehicles will also create yet more congestion on an already congested Weedon Road.
There is also the likely risk that stockpiles of waste can and do catch fire and in this location such an event would be nothing short of catastrophic.
