We the undersigned petition the council to Continue to allow Class C exemption for private rental periods whilst the property is vacant and advertised for let or undergoing renovation.

From 1 April 2013, the Council will charge private landlords council tax where the property is uninhabited. Previously, such properties were exempt for 6 months.

The rationale for this decision is that this change "will address the shortage of housing stock in the local area".

This petition contends that the decision will discourage private landlords and developers from either developing and improving properties in need of renovation and/or buying properties to let in the private rental market.

The Council should continue to allow developers and landlords to claim the exemption provided they can demonstrate the property is undergoing timely renovation and/or the property is advertised to let for an appropriate market rent.
